The Kenya Forestry Service approves, receives, and manages the Aberdare national park fees from local and international tourists.

Tourists enjoy the picturesque open moorland and forested ravines during an adventure at the park.

Occasionally, you can sight wildlife like black rhinos, elephants, leopards, olive baboons, buffalos, bushbucks, and spotted hyenas. 

Aberdare National Park Fees

Aberdare National Park charges access fees to visitors who enter the park.

These fees depend on the season, the activities you wish to experience, and the type of vehicle you’ll use.

These are the fees you’ll likely pay to access Aberdare National Park:

  • Citizen: Adults- Ksh.300, Children- Ksh.215
  • Resident: Adults- Ksh.300, Children- Ksh.215
  • Non-Resident: Adults- $52, Children- $26

Aberdare national park fees are only payable using Mpesa, Direct bank deposits, or Visa Cards. 

How To Get To The Aberdare National Park

The park gates open at 6.30 am and close at 6.30pm

They do not allow entry to the park by foot. However, if you intend to hike or trek, they make exemptions if you have an armed KWS guide.

By Road 

AberdarePark is 150km from Nairobi and easily accessible on the tarmac from Nyeri or Naro Moru on the Eastern side.

Additionally, there’s a road crossing Aberdare National park through the lower slopes up to the Moorlands linking with another road from Naivasha on the western side.

Driving to the park via Naivasha will cover 87km from Nairobi.

But if you’re coming from Nyeri, the park’s HQ is 15km away, along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road.

By Air

The closest airstrip, Mweiga Airstrip, is near Aberdare Park HQ, near Sasini Estate Farm.

Aberdare National Park Activities

There are lots of fun activities to do at Aberdare Park. These include: 

Bird Watching

Aberdare National Park is a bird watcher’s paradise with diverse avian species.

The park boasts over 250 different types of birds, including the majestic Jackson’s Francolin, the speedy Sparrow Hawks, the fierce Goshawks, the regal Eagles, the vibrant Sunbirds, and the elegant Plovers.

The park offers excellent bird-watching opportunities all year.

Still, the best time to visit is during the Wet season from November to April, when migrant birds from Europe and North Africa arrive, and tourists can observe breeding plumage.

Forest and moorland birds are resident year-round, and the drier months from June to September and December to February are ideal for bird watching.

Camping

Aberdare national park accommodation includes cabins located within Aberdare National Park.

These offer a self-service private sanctuary for trout fishing, walking safaris, and hiking.

During these activities, you can witness breathtaking waterfalls, stunning moorland vistas, and a wide range of wildlife, including lions, buffaloes, elephants, and rhinos.

But if you prefer setting up camp, here are a few camping grounds to explore:

  • Reedbuck (At the Moorlands): 2.5km from Kiandogoro gate and 9km from Mutubio gate. 
  • Honi Campsite: 11.3km from Wandare gate.
  • Bill Woodley Campsite: 2.4km from Shamata gate.
  • P.C Haji’s Campsite: 1.7km from Shamata gate.
  • Muringato (M1): 5km from Ark gate and 2.5km from Treetops gate. 
  • Bongo (M2): 3.5km from the Treetops gate and 6.8km from the Ark gate.
  • Nyati (M3): 4km from Treetops gate and 7.6km from Ark gate
  • Kiguru (K1): 3km from Ark Gate and 4.5km from Treetops gate.

Game Viewing and photography

Aberdare National Park’s diverse landscape, which includes moorlands, forests, and waterfalls, provides a unique backdrop for an unforgettable safari experience.

Park visitors can take game drives to view the park’s wildlife, and visitors can choose between self-guided tours or hiring a professional guide. 

The park also offers night game drives, where visitors can see nocturnal animals such as the spotted hyena, civet cat, and bush baby.

It’s also an excellent opportunity to capture the moments with a phone or professional camera.

Fishing

Aberdare Park offers some of the best fishing experiences. If you’re an angler, you will enjoy fishing for the Ova, Brown, or Rainbow trout in the crystal clear mountain tributaries. 

The best fishing areas are usually above 2,000m level.

For a successful fishing expedition, you must carry your fly fishing gear, including a fishing rod, a fly reel, bait, and a fly fishing net.

You can also bring a pair of polarizing sunglasses to shield off the glare from your eyes. 

Hiking

Aberdare National Park offers an excellent opportunity for walking and hiking enthusiasts.

The park has a network of walking trails that cater to hikers of all levels, from easy walks to more challenging hikes.
