Types of Work Visas in Kuwait

International workers can apply for any of the following Kuwait work visas.

  • Kuwaiti contract work visa – this is for contract-based employment. It is valid for up to three years.
  • General work visa – this is the most common work permit, valid for up to one year.
  • Kuwaiti residence visa – this is mandatory for long-term employment. It is valid for one year, after which you must renew it.
  • Student work visa – this is for scholars who want to seek part-time employment as they study.

Eligibility Requirements for a Kuwait Work Visa

Here are the requirements when applying for a Kuwait work visa.

  1. You must have a valid job offer and a sponsor.
  2. You must have the intention to return to your country once the visa expires. For this reason, you must have enough money for a return flight ticket.
  3. You must have enough money to support yourself and your dependents during your stay in Kuwait.
  4. You must have a clean criminal record. This must be supported by a police clearance certificate.
  5. You must obtain a health certificate from a licensed doctor proving you’re healthy and free of contagious diseases. The report must contain lab results for hepatitis B and C, filariasis, malaria, syphilis, and a chest x-ray for TB. You must also undergo HIV testing. 

Application Timeline for a Kuwait Work Visa

Step 1: Secure a Job

You must have a valid job offer before applying for a work visa. Job boards like Bayt and Linkedin are great places to find suitable vacancies. You can also check the government website. When applying for these posts, ensure they have sponsorship.

Step 2: Work Visa Application

Once you have a job offer, choose the appropriate visa type. Consider factors such as the length of the contract and the job description. 

Then, gather the required documents and begin your application. These include your passport, passport-size photographs, medical test results, and the police clearance certificate.

After completing the application, submit the form to the nearest embassy for processing. You will need to pay a $20 fee.

Step 3: Apply for a Residence Permit

If you intend to stay in Kuwait for more than a year, you must apply for a residence permit. You will be requested to undergo a physical health examination and purchase a health insurance cover during the application.
