Rope twist locs are the locks achieved by twisting two strands of already formed locs together.

Rope locs get their name from their final look; they end up looking like—you guessed it—a twisted rope.

How Do You Make Rope Twist Dreads?

Rope twists can be made during retwisting your locks when you’re getting all the growth back in line. Before twisting, ensure that the hair has been thoroughly shampooed.

If the hair has product build-up, give it an apple cider vinegar soak before washing. This helps get rid of all the gunk and product build-up. Ensure you have rinsed it well to eliminate the sour smell of apple cider vinegar.

How To Twist Rope Twist Starter Locs

To make the rope twist dreads on hair with growth, remember that you’ll be twisting and rolling simultaneously. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Spritz some plain water, rose water, or a light leave-in conditioner on the hair. This is good, especially if the hair is dried out; it prevents pain and breakage. Ensure you’re not using thick products on the locs, as this wears the locs down. Heavy products also cause build-up.
  2. Separate the locs and softly detangle the growth at the base. Apply your locking butter or gel on the roots and comb gently. Roll each piece on the palms, ensuring it’s tight but not painful.
  3. Once you have palm-rolled the twists, hold it down with a clip to keep it from unrolling. You can roll as many locs as you desire as long as you hold them down with a pin. Take into consideration the side you rolled the hair.
  4. Hold two palm-rolled locs together and twist them, twisting in the opposite direction that you had palm rolled and rolling it in the direction it was palm rolled.
  5. Hold the hair at the ends with a runner band to keep it in place. This prevents it from unraveling prematurely.

How Long Should You Keep Rope Twist Dreads In?

Rope locs are gorgeous, and there’s a temptation to keep them on for as long as we can. The duration you can keep the rope twists depends on your dread rope twist care routine.

It’s possible for your rope twist dreads to stay looking neat for up to six weeks. Some people prefer to keep the rope twist locs for a shorter period, not exceeding three weeks.

How Do You Wash Twists Without Messing Them Up?

To keep the rope twist locs from unraveling, do not wash them before two weeks are over from the locking day.

If washed too early, the air may also become frizzy. Frizzy is when instead of the ropes locs being smooth and shiny, they get little bumps, knots, and curls.

When you’re ready to wash your rope twist locs, check if your shampoo is thick. If the shampoo viscosity is high, dilute it with water to make it easier to penetrate the hair.

Here’s how to wash your rope twist locs:

  • Wet the locs with plenty of clean water.
  • Pour the shampoo into the hair and lather up with your fingers until the whole scalp has been scrubbed.
  • Spread the shampoo to the tips of the twists and give them a good rub.
  • Rinse the rope twist locs until all the shampoo is washed off. If your hair still feels less than clean, repeat the shampooing and the rinsing.
  • Wrap the hair in a cotton towel. Please do not run the hair vigorously when wet, as it causes breakage.

Conclusion

Locs come in many shapes, sizes, and types, and rope twist locs are among the gorgeous ways to style your hair. Two-strand twisting your locks helps them lock faster and stay neat for longer.

Do not twist the looks too tightly, as this may lead to breakage, damaged hair, and alopecia in the worst cases.
